On May 21, 2020, Kenya's COVID-19 recovery rate received a boost with the discharge of 9 more patients from hospital, bringing the total number of recoveries to 375.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe expressed hope for further recoveries, crediting the dedication of healthcare workers for the progress made so far.

However, the country's death toll stood at 50, with the latest victim being James Waswa Wetangula, a brother to legislators Moses Wetangula (Bungoma Senator) and Tim Wanyonyi (Westlands MP).

Wetangula was buried in Bungoma on Wednesday, with only 60 people in attendance, including the two leaders. He was Wanyonyi's Personal Assistant.

Kagwe urged Kenyans to adhere to the government's protective measures to help flatten the curve, which has been rising sharply since last week.

Kenya recorded 80 new infections on Thursday, raising the total number of cases to 1,109.

Public health officials are projecting the peak for COVID-19 in August or September, with up to 200 cases expected per day.

Among the new cases reported on Thursday were 20 in Mombasa, 41 in Nairobi, 7 in Siaya, 6 in Kwale, 3 in Garissa, and 1 in Taita Taveta.

The cases in Siaya were linked to mourners from Nairobi's Kibera slum, who obtained a fake permit to attend a burial and subsequently tested positive.
