On May 21, 2020, Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) summoned and questioned Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa in connection with alleged embezzlement of Sh244 million funds meant for Harambee Stars' Africa Cup of Nations preparations.
The funds were meant to prepare the national team for the Africa Cup of Nations, but allegations have surfaced that the money was embezzled under Mwendwa's watch.
According to officials, Mwendwa was accompanied by FKF officials when he arrived at the DCI headquarters for questioning.
A complaint was launched by the Ministry of Sports over the manner in which the funds were spent, specifically on outside broadcast equipment leased from a company that went into administration after receiving about Sh125 million from FKF.
The detectives also sought clarification on the players' bonuses, officials aware of the probe said.
Former Principal Secretary for Sports Peter Kaberia, now in the Ministry of Mining, was previously questioned by the same team at the DCI and is said to be among the complainants in the issue.
Officials say the probe has been ongoing and is in its final stages, with the file to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions with various recommendations for action.
