On May 16, 2020, a heinous act of sexual torture was allegedly committed in Tharaka South, Marimanti. The victim's husband, James Kifo, had been on the run for five days, evading arrest by the police. However, his attempt to seek protection charms from a witchdoctor in Kaningo, Tseikuru, Kitui County, ultimately led to his downfall.

According to Tharaka South Police Commander Kiprop Rutto, Kifo did not resist arrest when detectives apprehended him at the witchdoctor's home. Rutto stated, "He was at a witchdoctor's, but the government machinery cannot be beaten." The officers handcuffed Kifo and delivered him to Marimanti, where the alleged crime took place.

It is worth noting that Kifo had told the witchdoctor that he was evading arrest and asked for the necessary charms to be administered. However, when the officers burst in, he immediately surrendered, realizing he had been cornered.
