As Kenya battles the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Police Service has received a boost from the National Gun Owners Association (NGAO) in the form of a sanitization booth donation to Pangani Police Station.

On Thursday, NGAO chairperson Anthony Wahome handed over the booth, which was donated by the association's members in honour of the late Captain Akber Sumra, a pilot who died in a plane crash in Maasai Mara.

"After health care workers, they (police officers) are on the frontline and the most exposed," Wahome said, highlighting the risks faced by police officers in their line of duty.

The sanitization booth, unveiled by Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua, features ten nozzles that spray disinfectant on individuals simultaneously, providing comprehensive protection against the virus.

Despite the provision of basic Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to officers, Mbugua emphasized the need for more support, warning that tough action would be taken against individuals flouting curfew orders.

With COVID-19 cases in Kenya rising to 1,029 on Wednesday, the government has intensified efforts to prevent further spread, including imposing a dusk-to-dawn curfew and cessation of movement in high-risk areas.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has announced the extension of lockdowns in Old Town and Eastleigh due to the high number of cases.
