As part of efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19, the Kenyan government has extended the lockdown in Eastleigh and Old Town areas in Nairobi and Mombasa until June 6, 2020.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the extension, citing the need to keep these areas contained to prevent further spread of the disease.

"In order to contain further spread of the virus the National Emergency Response Committee (NERC) on coronavirus announces and directs as follows; an extension of the cessation of movement in and out of Eastleigh in Nairobi and Old Town in Mombasa until June 6, 2020," Mr Kagwe said.

The initial lockdown, which was announced on May 6, 2020, was meant to last for 15 days. However, the government has now extended it to ensure that the areas are contained and the disease does not continue spreading.

Eastleigh and Old Town were singled out by the Ministry of Health as COVID-19 hotspots, with a leading number of infections.
