On May 20, 2020, Tanzania's Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Luhaga Mpina, tabled the Deep Sea Fisheries Management and Development Act of 2020 in parliament for the second reading.
The bill aims to repeal the Deep Sea Fishing Authority Act of 1988 and its 2017 amendments, with the goal of improving the administration of the Deep Sea Fishing Authority and fisheries conservation.
According to Mpina, the new law will introduce conservation and management measures of fisheries, including research in the exclusive economic zone and the implementation of regional conservation and management measures.
The minister also stated that the new law will prohibit the use of fishing vessels for transnational organized crime in Tanzania.
Additionally, the introduction of the new law will coincide with the revamping of the Tanzania Fishing Corporation in Tanzania's mainland and the Zanzibar Fisheries Company to revive the fisheries sector.
