On May 21, 2020, Tanzanian President John Magufuli announced the reopening of colleges and suspension of sports activities in the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the President, the decision to reopen colleges was made to allow sixth-form students to resume their studies, while other high school students and primary schools would remain closed until further notice.

President Magufuli emphasized that the decision to reopen colleges was based on the fact that sixth-form students are adults who can take care of themselves, unlike younger students.

He also announced the suspension of all sports activities, including those for the military and drama, citing the risk of COVID-19 transmission through physical contact.

These measures were taken as part of the government's efforts to control the spread of COVID-19 in the country, which had led to the closure of educational institutions in mid-March 2020.
