On May 21, 2020, Egypt-based bus-hailing app Swvl received the green light from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to resume operations in Kenya.
According to Dip Patel, the General Manager for Swvl in Kenya, the company's compliance with NTSA regulations will be a major boost to their operations.
Swvl had to halt its services on most routes in Nairobi last year after NTSA asked the digital public transporters to cease operations or face arrests for operating under Tour Service License but engaging in commuter services.
However, the company has now resolved all issues with the NTSA and is ready to resume operations once the current pandemic lockdown is lifted.
Post-lockdown, Swvl plans to begin onboarding existing bus owners and public transport saccos, aiming to benefit the entire ecosystem with a more inclusive approach.
NTSA has expressed willingness to develop the regulatory framework to encompass user and industry-driven technological advancements, which will help to fill the gap in regards to regulating technology platforms in the transport industry.
Swvl and NTSA have continued to engage to arrive at a framework that will support technology-enabled transport solutions and take Kenya to the next level.
