On Wednesday, Busia County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri spoke to KNA in his office, cautioning flood victims in Bunyala Sub County against returning home too quickly.
According to Kanyiri, the recent floods in the area have subsided due to reduced rainfall, but he warned that the rains are likely to continue until June, as per the weather forecast.
"But those staying in the camps should be patient and observe the weather situation," he advised, urging them to listen to media reports for updates on the unfolding weather changes.
He also emphasized the importance of using mosquito nets for their intended purposes, rather than waiting for new ones to be issued whenever floods strike.
Furthermore, Kanyiri advised the victims to maintain high levels of hygiene to prevent the outbreak of cholera and other waterborne diseases.
At least 42,000 people in Bunyala Sub County have been displaced by floods after River Nzoia broke its banks, with many taking shelter in 73 centres, including churches within the raised areas of the Sub County.
The Government, through the Ministry of Devolution, has been providing assistance to the displaced individuals by offering food and non-food items while they are in the camps.
