This archive report was first published on 21 May 2020.

On a feature story assignment in Kenya, media personality Janet Mbugua fell victim to a sophisticated con artist scheme in Nairobi's Lenana area.

As she and her team were investigating a story about a self-confessed serial killer Philip Onyancha, the alleged victim's father tricked them into trusting a group of men who were supposed to provide security.

However, the men turned out to be con artists who kidnapped and robbed Mbugua's team, leaving them stranded in Ngong with no shoes and all their equipment gone.

According to Mbugua, the incident left her shaken, and she estimated the value of their stolen equipment to be around Sh500,000.

Although they reported the matter to the police, they never got a chance to verify if the man's son was an actual victim of the serial killer.
