On May 21, 2020, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated guidelines on the spread of the novel coronavirus.
According to the CDC, the virus does not spread easily by touching contaminated surfaces or objects, contrary to previous concerns.
Researchers at the CDC have found that the virus primarily spreads from person-to-person, even among those not showing symptoms.
While it may be possible to contract the virus by touching a contaminated surface and then touching one's mouth, nose, or eyes, this is not considered the main mode of transmission.
As the CDC notes, 'This is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads, but we are still learning more about this virus.'
The CDC has also stated that the risk of spreading the disease from animals to people is low, although the spread of the virus from humans to animals is possible but not easy.
Additionally, the CDC has reported a small number of pets worldwide, including cats and dogs, that have been infected with the virus after close contact with people with COVID-19.
