Kenya's Ministry of Health has confirmed 66 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases to 1,029 as of May 20, 2020. This marks the highest number of positive cases since the first case was reported in the country.
According to the Ministry, Mombasa county alone accounted for 30 of the new cases, with the remaining 36 cases spread across other parts of the country.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the new cases during a press conference, stating that the 66 positive cases emanated from 2,621 samples tested in the last 24 hours.
"In the last 24 hours, 66 people have tested positive for COVID-19. These cases emanated from 2,621 samples. This now brings to 49,405 the total number of samples tested to date in Kenya," said CS Kagwe.
Following the escalation in the number of positive cases, the government has extended the cessation of movement in Eastleigh, Nairobi, and Old Town, Mombasa, until June 6, 2020. Eateries, restaurants, and hawking have also been prohibited until the same date.
Additionally, the Ministry of Health has announced that testing of cross-border truck drivers has received a boost after Germany donated two mobile laboratories.
