Published on May 21, 2020, a devastating flood has displaced over 48,000 residents in Tana River County, with the Kenya Red Cross Society leading relief efforts.
According to reports, 8,153 households have been affected, with each household consisting of up to six family members, bringing the total number of affected people to 48,918.
The worst-affected areas include Tana delta, Tana North, and Galole, with 4,659, 2,821, and 673 households affected, respectively.
Security forces have been moving people to higher grounds, while the Kenya Meteorological Department projects that the ongoing rains will continue until June.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has warned of a series of mutually exacerbating disasters unfolding in East Africa, with ongoing heavy rain, locust infestations, and the spread of Covid-19 posing significant threats.
Dr. Simon Missiri, IFRC's Regional Director for Africa, stated, 'The ongoing flooding crisis is exacerbating other threats caused by Covid-19 and the invasion of locusts.'
The IFRC has provided over 7 million Swiss francs to Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies in East and Horn of Africa to respond to the multi-faceted crises.
