On May 21, 2020, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced the arrest of James Kifo, a 30-year-old man from Tharaka Nithi County, for allegedly sexually torturing his wife in front of their three-year-old son.

According to the DCI, Kifo lured his wife into a secluded area by the River Kathita and ordered her to reveal the names of all the men she had slept with while he was away. After hesitation, she was beaten by the suspect, who also sprayed pepper, salt, and super glue on her genitalia and later used a knife to push the said contents to the lady parts.

Tharaka South Sub County Commander Kiprop Rutto confirmed that Kifo had been in their wanted list for some time due to pending court cases associated with violence. Rutto stated that they had worked tirelessly with DCI officers from Nairobi to apprehend the suspect.

Kifo, who residents said was feared by all due to previous run-ins with the law, is expected to be arraigned. The police in Tharaka South said Kifo had managed to evade security surveillance in Nairobi and made his way home where he subjected his wife to sexual violence.
