According to Koinange, he met Sonia while working at NBC News in America. He had previously studied at New York University and landed a job at ABC News before joining NBC. Koinange described Sonia as an amazing person who made him realize his calling in media and never wish to return to Kenya.

As he reminisced about his time with Sonia, Koinange shared a poignant quote: 'and by the time I was actually married to my first wife Sonia, an amazing woman…a fantastic and…you know, I was living an American dream. I never thought of coming back to Kenya. That´s all. Kenya was the last thing on my mind…'
