On May 20, 2020, US President Donald Trump revealed he would finish his preventative hydroxychloroquine regimen in a day or two.
Speaking at a White House event, Trump stated, "I think the regimen finishes in a day or two. I think it's in two days," when asked about his treatment plan.
Trump had previously announced he had taken the anti-malaria drug on a daily basis for two weeks as a preventative measure against Covid-19.
Despite his enthusiasm for hydroxychloroquine, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned against its use outside of a hospital setting or clinical trial due to the risk of heart rhythm problems.
The FDA has also stated that hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine have not been shown to be safe and effective for treating or preventing Covid-19, although they are being studied in clinical trials.
