On May 20, 2020, Tunisian Prime Minister Elyes Fakhfakh unveiled a programme to revive his country's economy, citing the success in overcoming the coronavirus pandemic as a key factor.
The programme focuses on strengthening national sovereignty and security, preserving the economic fabric, and working to revitalise the most affected sectors. It also aims to combat corruption and impunity.
"This programme will be presented to the parliament at the end of next month," said Fakhfakh, stressing the government's commitment to mobilising the country's own resources to boost the economy.
Notably, Tunisia had successfully confronted the Covid-19 pandemic, with the prime minister calling on all Tunisians to preserve the gains attained during the first phase of partial lifting of lockdown and to respect all measures taken by the government to combat Covid-19.
As of May 20, 2020, Tunisia had reported a total of 1,044 Covid-19 cases with 47 deaths, and 826 recoveries, according to the Ministry of Health.
