On May 14, 2020, Kisii County in Kenya recorded its first Covid-19 case after a traveler from Tanzania tested positive for the virus.

The individual, who had been working in a hotel in Morogoro, Tanzania, had traveled to Kisii and was staying at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kisii.

Following the diagnosis, samples were taken on May 15 and sent to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) for testing, with the results confirming the positive test on Wednesday morning.

Twenty-three locals who were in the containment area with the victim at the KMTC Kisii will be re-tested, and 14 contacts of the individual have been put into quarantine at the same facility.

According to Kisii County Governor James Ongwae, the individual has been transferred from the quarantine centre to the isolation unit at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

"We have since transferred him from quarantine centre to the isolation unit at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital," Governor Ongwae said.
