Kisii County in Kenya recorded its first Covid-19 case after a traveler from Tanzania tested positive for the virus on May 14, 2020.

The individual, who had been working in a hotel in Morogoro, Tanzania, had traveled to Kisii County and was immediately placed in quarantine at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kisii.

On May 15, 2020, samples were taken from the individual and sent to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) for testing.

On Wednesday morning, the test results confirmed that the individual had contracted the virus.

As a precautionary measure, 23 locals who were in the containment area with the victim at the KMTC Kisii will be re-tested for the virus.

"We have since transferred him from the quarantine centre to the isolation unit at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital," said Kisii County Governor James Ongwae.

Additionally, 14 contacts of the individual have been put into quarantine at the KMTC Kisii as a precautionary measure.
