On May 20, 2020, Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka convened a special sitting to discuss a motion for the removal of Deputy Speaker Kithure Kindiki of Tharaka Nithi.

The special sitting, requested by House Majority Leader Samuel Poghisio, will be held in the Senate chamber at 2.00 pm on Friday.

The motion to remove Kindiki was tabled by House Majority Chief Whip Irungu Kangata, citing Kindiki's failure to attend a Senate Parliamentary Group meeting convened by President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi.

Kindiki's absence from the meeting, which also led to the sacking of Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen and his Nakuru counterpart Susan Kihika, has been seen as a sign of disrespect to the President.

As a perceived ally of Deputy President William Ruto, Kindiki risks being stripped of his powerful position in the latest purge orchestrated by the leadership of Jubilee Party.

Article 106 (2) of the Constitution provides that the office of Deputy Speaker shall become vacant under certain circumstances, including a resolution by the Senate with a two-thirds majority.
