On May 20, 2020, the Attorney General's office in Nairobi temporarily suspended marriage registration services due to a surge in applicants.

The move was prompted by the partial re-opening of the office on Monday, which led to overcrowding and a risk of COVID-19 transmission.

According to Mary Njuya, Registrar General at the AG's office, the high numbers of applicants went against the Ministry of Health's guidelines on COVID-19.

The office is now developing guidelines to ensure that marriage services can be provided safely and in compliance with health regulations.

"As a result, the office has temporarily halted all marriage services in order to develop a clear roadmap on reopening in a manner as guided by the Ministry of Health and to further ensure that safety measures are undertaken in the workplace," Njuya stated.
