On May 18, 2020, the Attorney General's office in Nairobi partially re-opened for selected marriage services, but the move was short-lived.
Just two days later, on May 20, 2020, the office was forced to suspend all marriage services due to an overwhelming number of visitors, which raised fears of COVID-19 transmission.
Registrar General Mary Njuya explained that the surge in visitors went against the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health to curb the spread of the virus.
According to Njuya, marriage services will remain suspended until further notice, and the office is working to develop a clear roadmap for re-opening.
"We regret any inconvenience caused and wish to ensure all our clients that we are working tirelessly to ensure that provision of these services resume as soon as is practically possible," Njuya said in a statement.
