On May 20, 2020, allegations of corruption surfaced against Bungoma women representative Catherine Wambilianga, with claims of high-end corruption emerging in recent days.
According to sources, Wambilianga has been using staff salaries to fund her personal investments in Bungoma and Nairobi. Furthermore, her two sisters, Anne and Sellah Wambilianga, are allegedly employed as ghost workers, earning Sh90,000 and Sh105,000 respectively.
Former personal assistant Allan Wocha has also come forward, claiming that he was threatened after demanding payment for his three months' salary, amounting to Sh600,000. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is investigating claims of embezzlement and payroll manipulation in Wambilianga's office.
Human rights activist Philip Wekesa, who took the case to the EACC, revealed that Sh66 million meant for civic education, sports, monitoring, and evaluation, and environmental conservation over three consecutive financial years has gone unaccounted for.
