Deputy President William Ruto's grip on Mt Kenya has weakened significantly following a recent purge by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
According to Ngunjiri Wambugu, a self-proclaimed Kieleweke leader, some of Ruto's allies are 'very scared' and have been reaching out to him for help in changing their allegiance.
Wambugu revealed that some of the Tanga Tanga members had confessed to being misled into supporting Ruto, believing that he and President Kenyatta were working together.
However, with the current situation, they have realized they were fighting the wrong battle, Wambugu said.
Currently, only four MPs in the region are still singing the Tanga Tanga tune: Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu), Alice Wahome (Kandara), and Kimani Ichungwah (Kikuyu).
On the other hand, Kieni MP Kanini Kega, a staunch Uhuru supporter, claims that at least 62 MPs out of 75 in the region are in the President's camp.
“The moderate ones we have welcomed them back. The extremists are still out there and today out of 75 MPs in the region, 62 are behind the President. What are these numbers they keep talking about?” Kega told Kenyan Digest on May 20, 2020.
