On Sunday, May 17, 2020, a dramatic scene unfolded in Laikipia County when David Kiwaka, the father of Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip, was shot in the leg by police officers.

According to the police, the incident occurred when officers went to arrest a suspect accused of domestic violence at Kiwanja Ndege area. Mr. Kiwaka, a former councillor, allegedly obstructed the officers from making the arrest, drawing a Maasai dagger and stabbing one of the police officers on the arm.

Laikipia County Police Commander Maxwell Nyaema explained that the officers used force to neutralize the aggression, shooting Mr. Kiwaka in the leg. This account contradicts an earlier statement by Senator Loitiptip, who accused the police of shooting his father for not wearing a mask.

Senator Loitiptip had stated, “My father, David Kiwaka, has been shot in the leg and brutally injured by police officers at Doldol Police Station, Laikipia County. He has been rushed to Nanyuki Cottage. I am currently in Nanyuki pursuing the matter. Justice must prevail for my father. That’s why I am calling for a speedy investigations and for the officer involved to be arrested,”
