On May 20, 2020, the National Treasury allocated Sh26.4 billion to Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) to support post-COVID-19 economic stimulus measures.
The allocation comes days after Director General Major Mohammed Badi raised concerns about the agency's cash flow challenges. The cash-strapped NMS has been experiencing financial difficulties since Governor Mike Sonko declined to assent to the Nairobi City County Supplementary Appropriation Bill 2020.
According to a letter from National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani to the National Assembly, the funds are part of the Sh53.7 billion approved by President Uhuru Kenyatta as part of the post-COVID-19 economic stimulus package in the 2020/2021 financial year.
Other projects and initiatives allocated funds include the Mukuru Renewal Project, which received Sh1.5 billion, and the Kenya Financing Locally-led Climate Action Project, which received Sh100 million in foreign financing.
The amendments will be funded through a combination of budget realignment, additional funding from development partners, and mopping up surpluses from parastatals.
