Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has been at the heart of Jubilee politics since 2012, but his current situation is a far cry from his former glory. In an exclusive interview, Murkomen attributed his woes to his unwavering defense of the Constitution.

As one of the architects of the Jubilee coalition agreement, Murkomen has always been a strong advocate for the Senate and devolution. However, his stance has put him at odds with President Uhuru Kenyatta, who he claims has been against the Senate's mandate.

'I have always fought for what I believe in, even if it means going against the President,' Murkomen said. 'There is no collective responsibility in violating the Constitution. Party discipline and loyalty are subordinate to the Constitution.'

Murkomen's comments come at a time when the country is grappling with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Senator believes that the pandemic has exposed the country's weaknesses, particularly in its institutions.

'A lot of harm can happen if we are not careful with a pliable Parliament,' Murkomen warned. 'The respect for independent institutions – the Judiciary and constitutional commissions – is at its lowest.'

As the country navigates the pandemic, Murkomen emphasized the need for a fundamental change in the way we live and work. He believes that the future depends on whether a vaccine will be developed and how soon.

'Governments will need to strategise, but not in the manner that is being done here where a small clique of the Executive thinks only it has a solution to this problem,' Murkomen said.
