Africa's Covid-19 Cases Rise to 88,172, Disease Agency Says

On May 20, 2020, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) reported a significant increase in confirmed Covid-19 cases across the continent.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the number of confirmed cases had risen from 84,634 on Monday to 88,172, with the virus spreading to 54 African countries.

According to Africa CDC, 33,863 people who had been infected with Covid-19 across the continent had recovered as of Tuesday afternoon.

The death toll due to the Covid-19 pandemic across the African continent also rose from 2,766 on Monday afternoon to 2,835 by Tuesday afternoon.

Africa CDC estimated the fatality rate of Covid-19 cases to be around 3.4 per cent of all cases in the continent.

The northern African region was the most affected area, both in terms of positive Covid-19 cases and the number of deaths.
