On May 19, 2020, Estonia became the latest country to restart its top-tier football league, with the Estonian Football Association (EFA) announcing the return of the Premium liiga behind closed doors.

The decision comes after the government lifted the state of emergency imposed on March 12 in response to the pandemic, allowing for the resumption of open-air sports competitions without spectators.

However, certain restrictions remain in place, with open-air sports competitions capped at 100 participants and no spectators allowed.

Starting July, the government will allow open-air events with up to 1,000 spectators.

The EFA has also decided to shorten this year's Premium liiga season from the usual 36 rounds to 32 for the top six teams and 30 for the rest.

"On Tuesday evening, the Premium liiga will return after a more than two month long hiatus," the EFA said in a statement.
