On May 19, 2020, the Kenyan government announced that cargo trucks would be allowed to move within East African Community (EAC) member states to transport goods.

According to Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed, all truck drivers must undergo a coronavirus test before crossing borders to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“Each truck driver must be subjected to coronavirus test. Cargo trade will continue as we continue to engage with Tanzania on the same,” CS EAC, Adan Mohamed, emphasized.

CS Adan clarified that Kenyan trucks were crossing into Tanzania, contrary to reports claiming they had been prohibited.

He emphasized the importance of EAC trade, stating, “EAC remains our biggest trade partner, we will focus on East Africa and anything that will damage relationship in the region we will deal with it. We are engaging our colleagues in Tanzania to clear any misunderstanding,” said CS Adan.

Without global commerce, CS Adan noted, the country would not be able to defend itself from the virus.

He also appealed to Muslims to adhere to health guidelines during the month of Ramadan, urging them to observe social distancing.

Kenya recorded 51 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 963. Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced 22 new recoveries, with the total number now standing at 363, and 50 fatalities.
