Kenyan Journalists Face Jail Term in Tanzania

On May 16, 2020, two Kenyan journalists, Clinton Isimbu and Kaleria Shadrack, were arrested in Tanzania while interviewing locals about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Published on May 19, 2020, the two journalists, a cameraman and reporter from Elimu TV, were charged with illegal entry into the country and working without the necessary permit.

After pleading guilty, they were convicted and faced a fine of Sh46,000 or an alternative three-year jail term.

According to Arusha Police Commander Jonathan Shanna, the journalists were arrested for entering the country illegally.

“The accused entered the country using a clandestine method. We have now handed them over to the Arusha Immigration Department for further legal action,” he stated.
