As Kenya's Cabinet undergoes a possible reshuffle, Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed's tenure may be coming to an end. The 62-year-old Roberto Azevedo, current WTO CEO, has announced his departure in September, and Mohamed is expected to compete for the position alongside three other candidates from Spain, Britain, and the Netherlands.
Speaking to the Financial Times in 2020, Mohamed expressed her preference for a female African leader at the WTO, stating, 'If that person happens to be African, or happens to be a woman, I think it would be so much better. It is important to be inclusive and show that the membership knows that every part of the globe can make a positive contribution to the running of the WTO.'
With a career spanning multiple ministries, including Foreign Affairs, Education, and Sports, Mohamed has served under President Uhuru Kenyatta's tenure. Her tenure as Sports Cabinet Secretary has seen notable successes, including Harambee Stars' qualification for international tournaments, as well as the men's and women's national rugby teams and the women's volleyball team qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
However, her time in office has also been marred by controversy, including the failure to renovate sports infrastructure and perceived inability to resolve conflicts within sports federations, particularly Football Kenya Federation (FKF).
