On May 19, 2020, Uganda President Yoweri Museveni took to the stage to address concerns over food waste during the COVID-19 pandemic. Armed with a knife, maize floor, and a plate of 1kg cooked ugali, Museveni demonstrated how a small amount of food can last a household for several days.

According to Museveni, 1kg of maize floor is enough to sustain a household for a number of days. He cited a scientific conclusion that 250kgs of posho is the optimal amount for consumption in this situation. This translates to 2.6kgs of posho providing about 10 days of sustenance.

President Museveni also announced that all Ugandans aged six years and above will be offered free face masks to protect themselves against the spread of coronavirus. Additionally, public and private transport will resume on June 2, 2020.
