On Monday, May 18, 2020, a heated dispute erupted between Turkana County Senator Prof. Malachy Ekal and Loima Sub County Criminal Investigation Officer (SCCIO) Davis Ondimo at the latter's office.
The Senator had gone to the SCCIO office to follow up on a land dispute, which has been ongoing for some time. The land in question is a 286-hectare plot, at the heart of the conflict, and is being processed in court.
According to Joseph Emuron Ebei, one of the complainants, the land belongs to the Kapokor family, comprising five families. However, other residents, allegedly backed by Senator Ekal, claim ownership of the land.
The dispute took a violent turn when Senator Ekal allegedly attacked DCIO Ondimo in his office. The DCIO was left injured and was taken to hospital for x-rays. Senator Ekal was subsequently charged with bodily harm.
As of Tuesday morning, police officers had not addressed the media on the matter, as the County Criminal Investigation Officer and County Police Commander were both out of station for a meeting in Nairobi.
