Published on May 19, 2020, a tense situation is unfolding in Meru County Assembly, where MCAs are at odds with Speaker Joseph Kaberia over the implementation committee.

The implementation committee, chaired by Elijah Kirimi, has been accused of being ineffective in ensuring that laws passed in the assembly are implemented by the county executive. MCAs have also called for Kirimi's resignation, citing his perceived docility in the face of challenges.

Meru municipality MCA Elias Murega has alleged that Governor Kiraitu Murungi's executive has been intimidating the assembly by failing to assent or implement passed motions. These motions include the removal of eucalyptus trees along water banks, assistance for street families, and the awarding of tenders to youth and people with disabilities.

Implementation Committee Chair Elijah Kirimi has denied claims of laziness, instead blaming the speaker and the legislature's leadership for antagonizing committee members. He also accused Speaker Kaberia of not being cooperative and being a stooge for Governor Kiraitu Murungi.

Meru MCAs have called for Speaker Kaberia to fully support the implementation committee, which would enable it to execute its mandate effectively. This move has been supported by Naathu MCA Samuel Mutura and nominated MCA Miriam Kajuju.
