Kenyan Singer Serro Set to Release New Album Kuwe ¶
Published on May 19, 2020
Kenyan singer Serro has built a name for herself as one of the country's top live performers since her days at the Sauti Academy. Her music is a fusion of benga and jazz, each song an African story told from an African perspective.
Her new album, Kuwe, is set to drop on May 30th. The album is a gift to her fans, and she chose the Zulu language and name because she likes it and the album is an offering to her fans.
When asked about the feel of the album, Serro said it is quite diverse, with a mix of Afro-soul, reggae, katitu pop, and more. The diversity of the sounds reflects the emotional rollercoaster in each song.
Some of the songs on the album are new, while others are previously released singles. Serro was influenced by Bien of Sautisol and Amanda Black when writing some of the songs.
She also talked about her process when it comes to writing and putting together an album. She wanted to share the stories that she had written over time, and chose the songs that she felt represented what she had been feeling and going through at the time.
As for what's keeping her sane during these strange times, Serro said she's trying to take it one day at a time and reminding herself to do so. She's also trying out new recipes.
Currently, she's listening to Manasseh Shalom and Isaac Kimani. She's intrigued by Isaac Kimani's songwriting and has Manasseh's album on repeat.
Excited for the album? Let us know here.
