On May 16, 2020, Germany's Bundesliga national soccer league resumed play, marking a significant milestone in the return of sports activities amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a result, Betika, a Kenyan sports gaming firm, has resumed full operations, offering a lifeline to the industry that had been severely impacted by the postponement of popular European leagues.
According to Kate Arudo, Betika's public relations manager, the industry had been adversely affected by the postponement of European leagues where Kenyans bet via mobile money accounts.
‘We hope that as the games slowly start, we will soon offer more options to our loyal punters. Our business has been affected like all other businesses around the world,’ she said.
Notably, the German football league resumed play under strict conditions that do not allow fans to attend matches, making it the first league among Europe's ‘Big Five’ leagues to resume amid the pandemic.
