On May 18, 2020, Kenya received a significant boost to its food security efforts, courtesy of 'Team Europe', a coalition of European countries including the EU, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Sweden, and Denmark.
The coalition pledged at least Ksh 2.4 billion to support Kenya's food security initiatives, with a focus on bolstering the country's agricultural sector, particularly in the horticulture, dryland crops, and dairy sectors.
The assistance, which includes funding for farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs, aid in the fight against locusts, humanitarian support, and epidemic control measures, is expected to benefit not only Kenya but also neighboring countries.
According to a statement released by the European Union, the support aims to strengthen value chains in the targeted sectors, with a focus on building resilience and ensuring longer-term food security.
The statement also highlighted the importance of integrating food security and water programs, as well as supporting sustainable trade with Kenya, to ensure the continued entry of essential agricultural goods into the country.
Furthermore, the 'Team Europe' support includes funding for the treatment of acute malnutrition, especially among young children, and to boost the overall health situation through the provision of basic services and epidemic control.
The assistance also extends to refugees and internally displaced people, with a focus on providing protection, shelter, food, access to health and nutrition care, as well as clean water.
With the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating the situation, the 'Team Europe' support is crucial in helping Kenya and the region tackle the challenges posed by the locust upsurge and ensure food security for the most vulnerable communities.
