On May 18, 2020, KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion expressed concerns about the potential consequences of reopening schools amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking during a press conference, Sossion warned that reopening schools may lead to a significant spike in COVID-19 cases, potentially resulting in 30,000 deaths by August.
According to Sossion, the current situation in June makes it inadvisable to reopen schools, and he instead advocates for learners to repeat classes rather than risking their lives.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had indefinitely closed schools after the first three cases of Coronavirus were confirmed in early March, and Education CS George Magoha had announced that schools would remain closed until at least June 4.
However, Sossion has criticized Magoha's handling of the situation, stating that he is incompetent and should be fired.
