On May 16, 2020, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) uploaded the 2017 election results data on their website for Kenyans to access, but hours later, they removed the data after spotting errors.
The IEBC cited 'typographic errors occasioned by massive data' as the reason for the removal, and apologized for the inconvenience caused.
According to the IEBC, the number of voters rose to 19,611,423 in 2017 from 14,388,781 in 2013.
However, the commission's data contained glaring mistakes, including wrongful listings of Members of Parliament for various constituencies and the political parties they vied on.
Some of the erroneous data showed that the late Kibra MP Ken Okoth and Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo had lost in the 2017 elections, when in fact they had won.
The IEBC's mistakes included listing Judah Martin as the winner of the Kibra seat with 66,914 votes, when in fact Ken Okoth had won, and listing Noah Onyango as the winner of the Suba North seat with 27,208 votes, when in fact Millie Odhiambo had won.
The IEBC also listed Kabondo Kasipul MP as Silvance Osele instead of Dr Eve Obara, and Dagoretti South MP as Dennis Waweru instead of John Kiarie.
