On May 18, 2020, Rwanda made a significant move in its logistics sector by securing a spot in the Naivasha Inland Depot, a strategic location for easy export and import via the Mombasa port.
The Naivasha port will revolutionize the freight industry as cargo will move through rail from Mombasa to Naivasha, a 560-kilometer journey, significantly reducing the duration of transportation. Trucks will then be used to ferry goods from Naivasha to Rwanda.
Rail transport is a more cost-effective and efficient option than road transport, and Rwanda plans to utilize the standard gauge railway to minimize logistics costs for Rwandan inbound or outbound cargo. According to Rwanda's Foreign Affairs Minister Vincent Biruta, the intention is to cut back logistical expenses.
Discussions are underway to explore the possibility of utilizing the Lake Victoria passage to transport goods to Kampala, further reducing transport costs and making it easier for Rwanda to import and export goods.
Authorities are keen to address the challenges caused by delayed cargo and congestion at ports of entry and exit, and this new development is expected to bring significant relief to the logistics sector.
