Heavy rains have left at least 5,000 people affected in Trans Nzoia County, with the government stepping in to provide relief to the victims.

On May 17, 2020, the Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa distributed foodstuffs to affected families in Namjalala Secondary School, where he assured residents that the government will rehabilitate dams to help curb floods in the area.

According to Wamalwa, the flooding is caused by silting of dams, and once rehabilitated, the people of Namanjalala will be at peace with water.

Wamalwa also asked locals to support the government in its initiative to rehabilitate the dams by moving away from riparian land.

Area MCA, Benard Wanjala accused a Chinese construction company working on Veterinary-Mail nane road for destroying the dykes at Namanjalala bridge that have led to floods in the area.

He asked the government through CDICC to sue the company and force it to reconstruct the dykes that were constructed by Kwanza CDF.

The Trans Nzoia County Commissioner, Samson Ojwang said that local administrators will assist in food distribution to the victims.

He said that the maize will be distributed by chiefs to individuals’ households to avoid overcrowding.
