On May 18, 2020, the Kenya Rugby League (KRL) announced the appointment of Edward Rombo as its new head coach. Rombo, a 53-year-old internationally accredited rugby coach, brings over 30 years of playing and coaching experience to the role.

As the first Kenyan to play professional rugby league, Rombo has a wealth of experience in both rugby union and league codes. He played for Leeds RLFC in England and later signed up for Dewsbury and Featherstone Rugby League Clubs during his international stint.

According to Rombo, his philosophy is to utilize Kenya's natural running abilities and keep the ball alive as much as possible. He aims to ensure that rugby league takes root in Kenya and has a strong national team that can participate in future world cups.

The Kenya Rugby League Federation (KRLF) has welcomed Rombo's appointment, citing his resourcefulness and wealth of experience as key factors in injecting impetus into the infant rugby league in the country and region.

Under Rombo's leadership, the KRLF plans to establish a short domestic league with 10 clubs, from which the national team will be selected. This will be in preparation for the maiden Kenya vs South Africa test match at the end of the year.

Edward Rombo's profile is a testament to his dedication to the sport. He has held various roles, including captain of Nairobi School in 1986, captain of the University of Nairobi's Mean Machine in 1989, assistant coach and team manager of Kenya 7's from 2003-2008, coach of Mwamba RFC from 2009-2010, and director of the Kenya Rugby Union from 2010-2012.
