Kenya: 35 COVID-19 Cases Traced to Mombasa As 57 Test Positive in 5 Counties

On May 17, 2020, Kenya confirmed 57 new COVID-19 cases, with the majority of them, 35, detected in Mombasa.

According to a statement from the National Emergency Response Committee, the 57 cases were from 2,198 samples analyzed within a 24-hour period, with the youngest case being 2 years old and the oldest 61.

"34 of the positive cases are males while 23 are females," the committee stated in an email.

The 35 cases in Mombasa were distributed across various sub-counties, with Mvita reporting 22 cases, Likoni 4, and Changamwe and Nyali each reporting 3 cases.

Other counties that reported new cases include Nairobi, Kajiado, Kwale, and Kitui, with Nairobi registering the highest number of cases at 9.

Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna announced that 12 more patients had been discharged after recovering from the virus, raising the number of recoveries to 313.

There were no fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, with the death toll standing at 50.

Additionally, 12 Tanzanian truck drivers who tested positive at Lunga Lunga (11) and Taveta (1) border points were denied entry into Kenya.
