As the world grapples with the Covid-19 pandemic, Kenya's response has been a subject of interest. The country's extended lockdown and border closure have been met with mixed reactions, with some people questioning their necessity.

However, a closer look at the situation reveals that these measures are worth the fight. Countries that have eased lockdowns too quickly have found themselves scrambling to prevent a second outbreak, as seen in South Korea where a new outbreak occurred the day lockdown was eased, resulting in at least 130 cases linked to one man who visited nightclubs in Seoul's nightlife district.

Kenya's swift action in responding to the pandemic has been a key factor in keeping the number of cases low. As of two months after the first documented case, the country had less than 1,000 cases, a sign of success in the fight against the virus.

While the extended lockdown and closure of borders may anger some of our neighbours in East Africa, it is also protecting us. Having porous borders will allow the virus to spread more and more. But with solid, reasonable policy decisions like the ones the government continues to make, we can slowly begin to re-open businesses within our country without too much risk.

It is essential to maintain physical distance from one another and wear masks at all times whilst in public places to protect ourselves and others. The Kenyan healthcare system is still in good shape, thanks in part to the president's efforts to improve healthcare provision and eventually reach universal healthcare for all.

Let us allow the government and other leaders to do their jobs and trust that they are making informed decisions based on the available information.
