Kenya has reported its highest daily number of COVID-19 cases, with 57 new infections confirmed on April 17, 2020. This is according to a statement by the government spokesperson, Cyrus Oguna.

According to the statement, the 57 new cases were reported after 2,198 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. The total number of positive cases in the country now stands at 887.

The new cases were distributed as follows: Mombasa had 35 cases, Nairobi had 17, Kajiado 3, while Kwale and Kitui had one case each. The youngest case is a two-year-old, while the oldest is 61 years old.

Of the positive cases, 34 are males, and 23 are females. The government has also confirmed that 12 individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 are Tanzanian truck drivers who were turned away at the Lunga Lunga and Taveta borders.

Meanwhile, 12 patients have been discharged from hospital, bringing the total number of recoveries to 313. The number of fatalities remains at 50.

The record-breaking number of cases has raised concerns about the country's preparedness for school reopenings in June, as hinted by the government earlier.
