On May 16, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) cautioned against the practice of spraying disinfectants on streets and surfaces to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the WHO, spraying disinfectants can be ineffective in eliminating the virus and poses a health risk due to the inactivation of disinfectants by dirt and debris.
"Spraying or fumigation of outdoor spaces, such as streets or marketplaces, is... not recommended to kill the Covid-19 virus or other pathogens," the WHO explained.
Additionally, the WHO warned that spraying disinfectants on individuals is "not recommended under any circumstances," as it can cause physical and psychological harm and does not reduce the ability of an infected person to spread the virus.
The organization also cautioned against the systematic spraying and fumigating of disinfectants on surfaces in indoor spaces, citing a study that showed it to be ineffective outside direct spraying areas.
