Siaya MCA Ambrose Akuno has found a creative way to support local artistes affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. In Germany, where he is currently holed up due to the pandemic, Akuno has organised a music challenge via a WhatsApp group.
The challenge, dubbed 'Luo Music Bank Forum', brings together Luo musicians, producers, radio presenters, and music specialists to promote talent and nurture upcoming artistes. The initiative aims to educate people about the virus through educative and entertaining songs.
According to Akuno, most artistes rely on live performances to make a living, which has been made impossible due to the ban and curfew. The music challenge has seen winners receive cash prizes between Sh5,000 and Sh60,000.
One of the participants, Benga artiste Kevin Migot, hailed the initiative, saying it has brought the best out of the artistes. Migot emerged second in the recently held challenge, winning Sh40,000 cash prize.
Another participant, Victor Wire, says the first challenge helped him clear bills that had threatened his peace during the pandemic. The winner of the music challenge, Boaz Jagingo, scooped Sh60,000 cash prize.
Akuno borrowed the idea from President Uhuru Kenyatta, who created a kitty to cushion artistes during the pandemic. The MCA has also distributed bar soaps, face masks, and hand sanitisers to locals in West Asembo ward to cushion them during this pandemic.
