Kenya is on the cusp of appointing a new Auditor-General, with a selection panel having short-listed 10 candidates for interviews next month.

The panel, led by former Treasury official Mutua Kilaka, has selected eight men and two women from a total of 67 applicants.

The candidates will be interviewed between June 2-3, following a court ruling in March that allowed the fresh recruitment to proceed.

Edward Ouko, the previous Auditor-General, retired in August last year, leaving behind a paralysis at the Kenya National Audit Office due to a lack of a constitutional mandate to sign off audit reports.

According to the Public Audit Act, the National Assembly has three days to approve or reject the President's nominee, who will be forwarded to them after the panel submits the names of the top three candidates to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

With the recent change in Parliament's standing orders allowing for virtual sittings, legislators may approve the President's nominee using Internet-based platforms.
