On May 17, 2020, ODM party leader Raila Odinga spoke out in support of Keroche Breweries, which is embroiled in a tax dispute with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

Speaking at the funeral of Tecra Wangari Muigai, the daughter of Keroche CEO Tabitha Karanja, Raila said it was wrong to target a company of Keroche's magnitude without basis. He vowed to stand with the Karanjas during their time of mourning and in their court battle with the KRA over a Ksh 9B tax claim.

“The Government should support local investors who have used billions to construct such companies and KRA should not use its muscles to oppress investors,” Raila said.

He also took a moment to mourn Tecra, likening her passing to the loss of his own son, Fidel Odinga, five years prior. “It’s very painful for a parent to lose a child and I take this opportunity to condole with the family during this very painful and difficult times,” he said.

With BBI rallies on hold due to COVID-19, Raila quipped that the movement was simply on halftime, and would continue once the pandemic was contained.

Nakuru Governor Kinyajui also expressed support for Keroche Breweries, calling it a source of pride for area residents. He noted that the move to antagonize local investors was not a good sign for potential investors.
